‘Mum’, ‘Mamma’, Mutter’ is a wonderful sound…. In whatever language this small word carries a big meaning for all of us. We each have different pictures in our heads about how we should be, or want to be, as a mother. Becoming a mum for the first time can be difficult and very different from what you expected. Many women give up a lot to become mothers - career opportunities, active social lives, a sense of freedom. Many mothers who don't work outside the home can sometimes feel isolated and under-valued in communities where most people go out to work. But if you can find support from other mums and share your daily problems with them, you can even end up smiling about the sleepless nights and the breastfeeding 'challenges'....
‘London Mums’ was created a few years ago by a group of new mothers based in London. They felt there was a need to share their experiences, joys and challenges to overcome some issues on pregnancy, breast feeding, weaning, toddler tantrums and choice of the right schools in London.
What differentiates London Mums from similar groups is the fact that we have an old-fashioned face-to-face approach while using technology and new media to help the communication. We love to meet at parties, events and local groups. Every excuse is good to catch up in person even if distances in London can sometimes make it difficult.
The paradox in the communication era is that we are overloaded with information but we tend to isolate ourselves and in a metropole like London it can be very daunting for a mum to spend time only with her baby. It is vital to meet peers to feel better about the challenges of motherhood, which can actually be quite funny if you share them with other mums.
The next opportunity to meet lots of fellow London Mums will be on 20th November 2009 at our annual Christmas party. Don’t miss it as it is going to be fantastic with top class interactive family show by Amanda Action Club, entertainer to stars like David and Victoria Beckham; Photo session with Santa in a grotto – Children will have the chance to meet Santa in person, get a free gift and enjoy free photo sessions well ahead of Christmas (in time to prepare your Christmas cards); Free Face-painting. Check online on < www.londonmums.org.uk or in our free magazine distributed across London for more information.
The London Mums group is run by mums to help each other out and now has become big enough to attract world experts who provide us with free advice. We aim to grow while remaining local and friendly.
We are now launching a bi-annual London Mums print magazine aimed at supporting those mums who feel the need to read in print and complements our already popular website www.londonmums.org.uk The key to the success of our growing organisation is the mums’ interaction and this is why we encourage all mothers to give us feedback as well as send us their SOS if they need our support.
Our group also provides a platform for women who want to start their own business and for those ‘mumpreneurs’ with more established businesses looking for networking opportunities. We have dedicated a section of this magazine to all businesswomen with the aim of inspiring mums who want to do something great for themselves.
We will host our first London Mumpreneurs Conference on 4th March 2010 aimed at any mum (or mum-to-be) in business. Whether you're simply weighing up your options, just started out, or have been running for years, this conference is for you. This event is a fantastic opportunity to hear the testimonials of the most successful mumpreneurs in the UK, network with likeminded people, and even have the chance to ask questions to celebrity mumpreneurs. Speakers include:
- Laura Tenison, founder and managing director of JoJoMamanBébé,
- Anna Gibson and Philippa Gogarty, Co-Founders and Joint Directors of Micro Scooters Ltd - the ladies who transformed London into ‘Scooterlandia’
- Sharai Meyers, Managing Director and founder of Purple Dragon
- Celebrity entertainer Amanda Frolich
- Kumud Gandhi founder of The Saffron House catering company and The Cooking Academy (well-known for catering stars like Madonna and royals such as the Prince of Wales and the Saudi Royal family)
- Justin Lusty, author of ‘Start-up – The Woman’s Guide To Running Your Own Business’
Spread the word and join in the fun - London Mums is totally and utterly FREE! And most importantly keep enjoying motherhood!
