With cuts to tax credits, child benefits, maternity support and Child Trust Funds, some have claimed the Budget will hit women particularly hard as many are in lower paid jobs and have to look after the elderly.
It is reported that two weeks before the Chancellor's Emergency Budget in June, Home Secretary Theresa May warned George Osborne to say the treasury was in danger of breaching equality laws. These require departments to consider the impact of policies on women, pensioners, ethnic minorities and the disabled.
Mrs May claimed that these groups would be disproportionally affected and said that women make up a higher number of public workers, while all four groups use public services more. In addition, Mrs May pointed out that the majority of those in receipt of tax credits and welfare payments are also from these group.
Yvette Cooper, Labour work and pensions spokesman, found in an 'equality audit' that women would be forced to bear more than 70% of the £8 billion pound cuts.
Equality campaign group The Fawcett Society has already legally challenged the Budget, with the Treasury still considering its response.
