I had been given cheques from relatives when my daughter was born and we wanted easy access to the money we looked around for a good childrens savings account. As I hadnt come across MyEggNest at that point I found good reviews on MoneySavingExpert for the Halifax Save4it account as it is one of top paying interest for online children's accounts.  The account was incredibly easy to setup - I filled in a form online and then about a week later the paperwork arrived. I had to pop into the bank with my daughter's birth certificate and the cheques. They couldn't have been nicer in the branch and my daughter was given a beautiful teddy bear and moneybox and calculator as well as her new passbook for the account. I have also set up a Childrens Regular Saver with Halifax at the same time (10% fixed rate interest) and at the end of the year that money will move into this Save4it account.   Obviously it pays to keep an eye on the interest rates and if in future the interest rates are not as competitive as others than we can change accounts just as I do with my own savings.

Children's Stakeholder Pensions

You can now save towards your children's retirement with a Children's Stakeholder Pension in your children's name. This is a government backed scheme where you can invest up to £2,808 each year, net of tax, and the Inland Revenue will add 22% basic rate tax relief to this, bringing the total amount invested up to a maximum of £3,600 a year.

By starting a Children's Stakeholder Pension young, your children's pension pot will have a huge boost in comparison to those who waited until their working lives to begin paying towards a pension.

A contributions of £3,600 per annum between ages of 0 - 16 yrs (and then stopped) could leave your child with a potential pension fund value of £1,230,000 at age 60 (these projections are based on a medium growth rate of 7% with an Annual Management Charge of 1%, courtesy of Axa Sun Life).
