I've just applied for a new child trust fund for my 12 week old son Edward. I picked the children's mutual after reading about them in oneof my Bounty packs and after reading some of the other reviews on this site. The website is really easy to use, and the application process takes about 2 minutes - You can even apply before your £250 arrives, and then just send it on to them with your name on the back once it gets to you. I had to contact customer services at the childrens mutual about my account - I was daft enough to fill some detail in wrong ont he site. They had no problem at all changing these and there was no queuing on the phone to get through - Brilliant

Good Points:
This fund was very east to set up on-line and only took about five minutes. The response was also quick (within a week) and the direct debit came out the following month. I am happy with there return and it is a stable longstanding investing company. I also got £30 mothercare vouchers for setting up a direct debit of over £10 per month-bonus!
Bad Points: I really can not fault this company but appreciate that we only set it up two months ago. They are a large organisation so I am sure this money will be safe. Also the direct debit can be altered at any time.

Good Points:
Hi, we opened an account with the children's mutual after seeing an artical in the Daily Mail. The report was stating that this has the best performance over the 18 years the account would be active. Also, we noticed a leaflet in Mothercare about this account offering £20 mothercare vouchers if you set up direct debit of £10 or more a month. It was very easy to open over the web, but can also be opened over the phone of by filling out a form.
Bad Points: Unsure as to what types of stakeholders or shares our baby's money has been invested in and would be nice to know.

We opened an account with children's mutual through Lloyds TSB. We did it all online (apart from posting off the voucher obviously!). Really quick and easy and we got a £20 Boots voucher for setting up direct debit. Because we bank with them too means we can transfer money online too. The only drawback was it was a bit long winded initially transferring money in as had to wait until account was all set up, send off voucher and then transfer it, but I presume you would have this with anyone. We were looking for a stakeholder CTF so suited us well.

I opened a Mutual Account with (what was then) the Tunbridge Wells Equitable Society when my daughter was born, over five years ago now. I had no problems in setting up the account and am still paying in £25.00 per month. It seems to be a With Profits Plan, as oppposed to a Stakeholder one, but I am concerned about its performance as there has been a lot of bad press about these accounts since I opened mine. I will keep it running for a little while longer but would suggest to anyone considering it to carefully consider these accounts. That being said, the only problem I encountered was when I moved house and it took quite a while (and a few letters/phone calls) for them to take note of that!

Alternative to CTFs

Tax Exempt Saving Plans (TESPs)

One of the best ways to save for your children's future is the Tax-Exempt Savings Plans (TESPs) from friendly societies. TESPs offer parents a simple way to save up to £25 for each family member per month in addition to, or instead of, a CTF.

TESPs can help you build up a lump sum for any child through small regular payments. You choose when the money is available for them, but the policy must run until they’re at least 16 and run for a minimum of 10 years.

TESPs are available for every member of the household so a family of four could save up to £100 a month tax-free and, provided the TESPs have been set up in the parent's names, the money remains firmly under their control. In addition, the flexibility of TESPs mean that they can be set up to mature at different points in a child's life.
