How Will the Spending Cuts Affect Your Child?

A Sunday Mirror investigation found that the coalition government's harsh spending cuts will hit children four times harder than the nation's "fat-cat" bankers. The Budget, targeting everything from benefits to university funding, is anticipated to mean that youngsters will lose out on £7bn and students by £2.9bn. Here is a round-up of some of the most controversial and wide-reaching cuts to funding:

Child Trust Fund
All children previously received at least two payments of £250 from the government into their tax-free Child Trust Fund account, but babies born from January this year are no longer eligible for the scheme.

Child Benefit
Child benefit payments, worth £20.30 a week, will be withdrawn from households with at least one higher rate taxpayer (an income of £44,000).

Child Tax Credit
Worth £545 a year, there will now be stricter eligibility for Child Tax Credit. Now it will start to be withdrawn with household incomes over £40,000, instead of the previous £50,000 threshold.

Child Care Allowance
Around half a million families will lose an average of £436 over three years, due to new rules which state that anyone entitled to working tax credit will only be able to claim 70 per cent of their childcare costs. Previously, they could claim up to 80 per cent.

The Health in Pregnancy Grant
The one-off payment of £190 for expectant mothers has been scrapped.

Sure Start maternity grant
The one-off payment of £500 to aid low-income families with the costs of a new baby has been limited to the first child only.

Sure Start centres
There will be cuts to funding for Sure Start which may mean 315 centres across the nation may close.

School funding
The Institute for Fiscal Studies has estimated that cuts to school funding will amount to 2.25 per cent per pupil, with 84 per cent of secondary school pupils enrolled in schools facing these cuts.

Education Maintenance Allowance
EMA payments worth up to £30 a week will be scrapped. The grant, paid only if the pupil attended classes, had aimed to encourage teenagers to stay in school past the age of 16.
