MyEggNest is proud to support Get Connected.

You can learn more about Get Connected, a free, confidential helpline for young people, here.

To find out how you can make a donation, visit www.getconnected.org.uk.

Get Connected

Most of us will experience problems of some kind or another during our lifetimes, particularly when we are young. You may have been lucky and had sympathetic friends or family to turn to for support. Or maybe, like so many others, you just didn’t know where to look for help.

With one call, email or webchat to Get Connected young people up to the age of 25 can get the support they might need to identify their priorities, establish what kind of help they want, and then choose from the best sources of help, relevant to them. For any problem.

Get Connected can also connect them straight through to the people who can help them, for free, even to numbers that would usually charge, like Social Services or Samaritans.

15 year-old Sam* contacted us through webchat, explaining that she felt trapped in her violent family, and had recently been self harming to make herself feel better. She wanted help, but had struggled to find an outlet she felt comfortable with: “I’d cry too much explaining it on the phone”. We gave her details of a suitable online source of support and she emailed us later that evening: "Thank you for everything you've done..you might have saved my life tonight.."

Volunteers

The helpline is staffed entirely by trained volunteers, who each commit to one four-hour shift each week. Justin explains:

I have been a volunteer on the helpline for the last 14 months and have heard some of the most heartbreaking stories. I have heard young people tell me about their lives and problems. Some of the things they have had to endure in their lives would have broken most adults. The upside of this is that with the training I have received and the resources that I have at hand in most cases I can give the caller some options.

The volunteers’ time and skills saved get connected £180,000 last year, but it’s still not cheap to recruit, train and support the team and Get Connected rely entirely on voluntary income to run the service.

How can I support Get Connected?

Aside from donations, Get Connected also host a variety of fund-raising events that include auctions, stand-up comedy nights and marathons.

This month: On Sunday, April 18th, MyEggNest is hosting a charity gig at London's Hoxton Underbelly, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to Get Connected. Click here for full details!
