There's some great tips out there. In terms of spending I really think we increasingly live in an age of "paying" for our lifestyles. What I mean by that is when you work F/T and have a life outside of the 9-5 world (relationships, friends, children, hobbies, leisure etc), you quickly realise that trying to maintain a full life comes at a cost. I don't believe that having a full life means that you need to spend a lot of money but I do think that having the energy to live a full life means that sometimes you have to spend when you'd rather not

I've found it really helpful to keep a spending diary - I was very surprised to see where I was spending too much money! I think my main problem with spending wisely is my brain hasn't quite realised that my income has reduced. And that cars are very expensive to run...

Quote: Laura-Archer, Saturday, 16 Jun 2007 15:51Shopping at places like Costco is also a good idea, because you can buy in bulk and although it may seem like you're spending more in one shopping trip, because you've bought bulk packs, it lasts for so much longer. Another thing is to buy presents throughout the year, so that you save when it comes to Christmas, Easter or any other holiday that causes shops to bump up their prices because everyone's so spend-happy. If you buy gifts throughout the year when you see them on offer, or try buying things on auction websites (am I allowed to say which specific one?) because you can buy things new, but for far cheaper. Even try sending e-mails to companies praising them can result in freebies or vouchers, which always help keep the costs down. And it costs nothing to send a nice message to a company whose products you use frequently. i do the same! summer sales are excellent at grabbing xmas present bargins! and then in the december sales i grab some birthday presents!

It's easy to save, if you know exactly what you are saving for! For example, say it's a house you are hoping to buy, or providing a university education for the kids, even a world cruise(!).. well you should make that the focus of your thoughts whenever taking even a penny out of your pocket. The more you focus on the goal, the more you will want to taste the sweet success of achieving it, so in turn spending will almost seem like comitting a grave sin lol. Have a dream/plan/aim.. money makes the steps to reach the heights of success, so collect the pounds and pennies wherever possible! I'll finish with the following cheesy line: To save money is to earn extra money without working any overtime!

# Hand-me-downs An obvious one first - look out for unneeded items from relatives or other parents. If you start giving things away first people won't think you're a cheapskate. This leads on to... # Keep boxes for any gifts you receive If an outfit doesn't fit or your child doesn't like a toy, you can re-package it and make it a present for someone else when the time comes. For anyone reading this who's given us presents - no, of course we haven't given yours away! # Buy second-hand Visit charity shops and second-hand sales (the NCT sales are usually excellent) for cheap toys, clothes, baby equipment and books. Withdrawn books from the library are also great value. Make a home video of your little angel as a present. # Use your library Speaking of libraries, visit your local one to hire CDs, DVDs, videos and of course books instead of buying them. An added advantage is that the children's sections in libraries are often free play areas as well. # Free videos Make your own video or DVD by recording your child's favourite programmes. Also successful is letting them watch your own home videos, especially if it shows a memorable outing or event. # Cheap presents For Christmas, birthdays, Father's Day or Mother's Day, etc., make a home video of your little angel as a present. Alternatively, put a photo, hand print or their artwork in a frame. # Don't buy so many toys Babies in particular are often inundated with toys and teddies, many of which will go untouched. It's tempting to add to their collection when you see something irresistable but try waiting a week and then deciding whether you really need it. The urge is likely to have worn off and your baby will still be as contented as before. # Use the internet Not just for shopping but also for online jigsaws and games and print outs to colour in. Visit www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies or the website of your favourite character. # A picnic is a great way to save money and have fun as a family. Have a picnic Instead of fast food, instead of expensive attractions, pack a picnic and head out to a nice spot in the country. Get your child involved with the preparation as well and you've got a fun day filled for free. # Swear box Even better than saving money is gaining money. I'm ashamed to say we tried this and had a surprising pile of money after not very long. Yes, it was from my own pockets but you don't notice it. # Get some freebies apply online for freebies and samples.

The best way i find i can save money is by being more environmentally freindly, eg i ride my bike to work insteadof driving the car when the weathers not bad, i switch of lights when im not using them, also in the morning whe im doing my brush i dont leave the tap ruuning, it all may be small things but they all add up, happy saving!!
