Hello all! I have two daughters, the older is 4 and the younger is just 3 months old. My older daughter starts school this September. Any tips on how to save on school uniform? Thanks!

Always shop about for the best offer, and never leave it too the last minute as guaranteed all the bargains and offers will be gone.

Does it mean we have to buy the uniform now? I am afraid my daughter will grow by September and then the clothes bought now would be too small or still too big. And will she need the 'summer dress' or 'pinafore dress' in September? Thanks again!

If you read the papers currrently it is saying howthere is a price war between the supermarkets, you can pick a whole school uniform ie skirt socks t shirt sweatshirt etc for less than a tenner, so don't think that is bad. Hope this helps

I always go to the market places as uniform is so much cheaper there also asked any freinds who's child may have grown out of their uniform and maybe you could have good condition items. Much of my sons items especially PE stuff was still in great condition when he grew out of it.

I always buy a size or two bigger as they grow so fast ans the uniform needs to last for a year anyway. My son's items were always atleast one size bigger than he is.

Definitely supermarkets - Tesco is great but bear in mind they will mostly do the most common colours only (black, navy blue) I had trouble tracking down bottle green!

Other than that has anyone tried ebay?

try www.freecyle.org as people give them away on there as children grow so quickly.

or try asda and tesco as very cheap

How many "sets" of uniform do you recommend buying to allow for some of them being in the wash?

And has anyone found that the cheaper ones wear out more quickly than your children grow out of them?

Many thanks for all ideas, but here are some more questions: do girls need 'summer dresses' in September? And did anyone try to find 100% cotton uniforms - I did not see any 100% cotton skirts/trousers or dresses in supermarkets.

i bought my son 2 school sweatshirts and tshirts from the school which were very expensive and then topped up with tshirts and trousers from asda and m&s. interestingly its the asda trousers which have lasted longer than the m&s more expensive ones!

to make the sweatshirts last longer a friend advised me to iron them inside out, no fluff on the tshirts and no shine on the outside.

labelling was also going to cost a fortune but i looked on ebay and there is a seller there offering 72 woven tags in a choice of colours and letter styles, with or without a picture for only 1.99 and 99p postage. they were fantastic quality and at that price i dont mind having to buy each child more sets instead of just using the surname!

Last year i bought DD school uniform on a 3 for 2 at M&S however i found that she didn't really need all of the 3 skirts as by the time May comes they are wearing gingham dresses.... so this year i intend to still get them on a 3 for 2 offer but buy one of them the next size up for next year. By doing this i've then got some of her uniform already for next year....

asda and tesco are both good value, but beware of quality. bought my 4 yr old some asda grey trousers and within a couple of months they'd faded and were uncomfortable

Bought yesterday 100% cotton cardigan, jumper, trousers, skirts, colour polo shirts and blouses in Asda, they are really good value (all being pure cotton!), seem to be good quality too!

Not sure if you have bootfairs near to you,But i usually find brand new items for school,For instance 3 shirts in packet for around £2.00 with tags still on at bootfairs,Also charity shops have a wide selection of school uniforms at cheap prices.
I really do think even though school uniforms are expensive if you shop around you can pick up bargains.
Must admit school uniforms do give child a smart look & saves on expensive items in fashion to wear to school.

Hi there, you may well find that the school have a "second-hand" rail at the summer fair where you can pick up some bargains.

I'd REALLY recommend buying the summer dresses, as we tend to still need them for a couple of months once school starts. However, how will your daughter be integrated? Here they tend to have them in for three days, 2 hours a day for the first few weeks then gradually build them up, if htis is the case, you'll possibly get away with just one dress.

Good luck!

Good point. I am not sure about this, so I will ask at the parents' meeting. They have 3 reception classes, children are divided according to their age. My daughter is in the "oldest" class so I thought she would have the whole week right from the beginning.
Thanks

If you're looking to save on school uniforms, try shopping in places like BHS and even places like Primark, for cheap white shirts and navy (or whichever colour you need) cardigans. You should also be able to get trousers and shoes that fit into school uniform guidelines without having to spend a fortune. Hope that helps!

I find the best way is to wait until term almost starts, here in the North West at least, prices go down.

I always buy at the end of each season when its reduced. I buy a size larger and so far *touch wood* its always fitted!

Also buy her coats for the following year but go 2 sizes bigger as it doesnt matter if coats are a bit bigger and it allows for those big jumpers underneath!

i bought some disney knivckers for 10pence eache even though my daughter cant wear them for 5 6 years!

hi. if you are on benefits then alot of schools will you give you two jumpers free of charge a year.
I have bought shirts from woolworths in the sale and keep looking in peacocks, i have bought grey and black trousers in there £3 each, they quite often have them reduced.

I always buy my daughter uniform a year in advance.

She is in 6/7 now so I am buying lots of 7/8 and 8/9 in the sales ... skirts and summer dresses in Asda are down to £2 !!

I make sure that she has 5 summer dresses (one for each day). 2 pairs of trousers and at least 2 skirts.
Combining them she will always have enough uniform to wear all week without having to do a midweek uniform wash.

I buy the packs of white tops from Tesco (and their socks too) usually in the sale. Full price they are not too bad pricewise and I always buy a size too big to make room for me shrinking them in the wash !!
