Can anyone provide a simple guide to the Child Tax Credit.

Why can't the government make it simple like the Child Benefit System?

The CTC is so confusing, and the amount you get can change drastically if you start/stop work, if your childcare arrangements change etc.

All I'm looking for is something that says, if you earn below £*k you will get the full allowance (depending on number of children), above that it reduces (I assume linearly) until you reach a salary of £*k, when you get nothing. I've searched the Web, but can't see to find anything that simple.

Thanks,
jonny5

Hi

There is a document I found within some pack I recevied that did detail the wage brakets and amounts of WFTC paid.

I have also seen it on the web - I think it was on the HMRC site - have alook for publications/leaflets and you can view it in PDF.

I totally agree - it is far too complicated and subject to ever changing criteria. I haven't bothered applying yet because it's "only" a few hundred pounds and I remember reading all the news stories about people having to pay back thousands in over-payments because their awards were inaccurate. I know the situation, with regard to over-payments, has now changed but I still don't have much faith in the system. :(

The inland revenue has completely messed up my tax credits. i didnt receive any payments for almost a year and nearly got evicted, despite my being entitled to it as i have worked continuously for the same company for the last 7 years!! apparently, the tax computers cant talk to each other.

now they say I owe THEM 5500!!!

i dont think so!

Also agree that nothing is simple with CTC. they completely messed up ours a couple of years ago and we are still paying the backlog. I phoned to tell them that my husbands wage had changed but nobody changed it on the system so we were overpaid. It completley messed us up as they stopped payments and sent us into debt both with them and personally. I am over cautious now with any info they send us.

we also have to pay back some money. the system sent an extra payment (apparently a computer does everything so they cant change the payments) n they said we were over paid n have to repay it

Hi,

Thankyou for for all the advice you have given on this subject.

I too was confused and didnt know much about the CTC at all. Until i visited the child benefit site and it also showed another link on there with regards to the CTC, it gives you an online calculator to work out how much you are entiled to, i found this very useful and helpful.
