When my daughter was born I wasn't a British citizen yet -- I just had permanent residency -- and I was eligible for child benefit.

Just be sure to fill in the forms early on. If you wait too long after your child is born I think they backdate the payments only 3 months (at least those were the rules a few years ago).

Hope this helps!

if you phone the child benifit number and ask to speak to an adviser then can tell you what to do as in some cases two parents can get the money split down the middle if you share the care right down the middle like 3 days the childs with you and 4 days with mum or dad. hope this helps.

If parent's split up, i think the child benefit should go to the parent that has the child the most. Undoubtedly, it will be that parent that buy's most of the child's needs.

I thought it was as someone prev wrote - the Child Benefit goes to the main carer of the child.
But best to ask the Child benefit office to get the ins an outs of it...
