Quote: NIGELJWHALL, Thursday, 21 Jun 2007 17:25Does anyone have experience of claiming Child Benefit for a student who leaves special secondary school and goes on to college during the year up to their 20th birthday?
We have been claiming for our Downs Syndrome daughter while she has been at school. She has enrolled for college in the Autumn, and will not be 20 until Jan 08.
We have had conflicting advice. The rules seem to say that if she has enrolled on a similar course at college following leaving school, then we may still be entitled to claim. She is learning life skills at school and will be doing simliar learning at college.
Can anyone help? Thanks
Hi Nigel
My sister was in very similar position. Basically from our understanding, this is what we know:
- Child Benefit will ceased the day after your children's 20th birthday.
- The course must be a "continuation" course as defined by their criteria and the place of study must on their list of accredited institutions.
- Finally they need to know when the course started and when it will end.
I would call the Child Benefit office on 08453 021 444. They are open from 8am-8pm.
Hope this helps
