Good Points: Quick to apply for, reliable, online or in person application
Bad Points: No telephone application
First reviewed on 16 Sep, 2007 by DebbieWright
We chose this trust fund because we bank with Halifax and have found their products both reliable and competitive in the past. We found this trust fund really easy to apply for - the form can be filled in online or you can go into the branch and collect one. They don't offer a telephone application but you can phone if you need to ask anything and they are always very helpful and answer the phone really quickly.  The application was processed very quickly - we heard back within the week so our son's cheque was working for him in the shortest time possible. They are old established and reliable - the trust fund meets all of the relevant guidelines. You can go into a branch and talk to real people about this product if you want to rather than doing everything online.  There aer no gimmics or freebies with this trust fund - it is just honest, reliable and what you see is what you get. Now we have had our first statement we are pleased with the performance of the fund.

Good Points: may rise in value
Bad Points: may not make any money
First reviewed on 17 Jul, 2007 by susisctf
I decided not to invest in the stakeholder child trust fund as in this day and age it seems very risky to invest in stocks and shares but if you do choose to invest in either a stock market or deposit based fund and save without paying tax on any growth in the child's savings. If you choose to invest in a stock market based fund, the value of the investment can fall as well as rise and the child may get back less than has been invested for them. If you choose to invest in a deposit fund, interest earned by the fund is variable and not guaranteed. but i found it so difficult trying to choose a bank or building society my daughters voucher had been sitting in the house for 11 months and i only had a couple of weeks left before it ran out so remember to get it invested.

Hello, well i found the staff from halifax to be very helpful and lovely indeed. they catered to all of my needs and i am very very happy with my package.it seems to be the best i have seen, i have spent a long time looking around at all of the different options and not many have even come close. i would recommend this halifax child trust fund to any one as i have had no problems with it and it has all been very easy to sort out and to understand. i would like to know how other people have got on so i hope many of you add your reviews too.

Bad Points: Higher rates available.

Ease of access to all information required on internet, staff were friendly and helpful. The rates are quite good, there are other companies offering better rates however i feel the ease of dealing with the fund and the excellent customer service is more valuable.

Alternative to CTFs

Children's Stakeholder Pensions

You can now save towards your children's retirement with a Children's Stakeholder Pension in your children's name. This is a government backed scheme where you can invest up to £2,808 each year, net of tax, and the Inland Revenue will add 22% basic rate tax relief to this, bringing the total amount invested up to a maximum of £3,600 a year.

By starting a Children's Stakeholder Pension young, your children's pension pot will have a huge boost in comparison to those who waited until their working lives to begin paying towards a pension.

A contributions of £3,600 per annum between ages of 0 - 16 yrs (and then stopped) could leave your child with a potential pension fund value of £1,230,000 at age 60 (these projections are based on a medium growth rate of 7% with an Annual Management Charge of 1%, courtesy of Axa Sun Life).

Children's Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs)

Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) allow people to save their money in a range of investments such as cash, stocks and shares. Unlike investing directly in these products, investing through an ISA provides certain benefits. An ISA is often referred to as a “tax wrapper” which goes around your savings, protecting them from paying certain taxes.

Many parents are using their own ISA allowance to invest for their children (as the age for investment is 18 yrs). Parent can put away upto £7,000 pa each.

You can save cash in an ISA and the interest will be tax-free and/ or you can invest in shares or funds in an ISA and any capital growth and dividend income will be tax-free.
