I have finally got round to opening Lotties' Trust Fund account and found my eggnest.com which was very information an easy to use. When you have a small baby and don't have much time this site is exactly what you need! I have decided on Familty Investments Ethical for my second daughter (I also chose this for my first daughter although the return hasn't been great due to the current climate) I still think it has the best long term future and also because of its ethical base. The online application couldn't have been more simple and only took a few minutes, you can also keep a check on how it's tracking online. I would recomend this.

Good Points: It is an ethical account which means that it doesn't invest in companies that deal arms or do things that you perhaps wouldn't want your child being involved in when they grow up!
I receive a yearly breakdown of what's gone in, how much it is currently worth and what might come out!
It has cute Mr Men all over the literature...although Im not sure why it needs to be attractive to my 2 year old!to use.
Bad Points: As it doesn't invest in "nasty" companies that make the most money the return will not be as big as with other accounts. (But it's all 'good' money so you are rich in morals!)
They recently changed the companies that they invest in due to the global economic down turn...it seems as if it isnt financially viable to be 'good' in a credit crunch!

Good Points: So easy to set up and watch grow (bit like grass on a bog, takes years). Never needed to get in touch with staff as yet, but sure they'll be up to standard as this product has been so far.
Bad Points: So much info out there, things need to be made a little clearer from us non-financiers.

fingers crossed this will be a windfall in 18 years, still not quite comfortable enough to throw more money into it yet, although ethical funds are the way forward.

I was attracted to this fund as it was an ethical fund. As with personal investments, I wanted a fund that would only invest in ethical companies. The fund was easy to set up and I contacted them on a couple of occasions for further information and I found staff to be friendly and more importantly knowledgeable. It is easy to invest additional funds if required and you are able to view your account online. All in all I am extremly pleased with this fund (apart from the fact that the investment value has declined over the last 2 years - however I am sure this is true for all funds due to the stock market conditions). My wife and I have just recently had another baby and will be investing our voucher in this particular fund.

After researching the trust funds available we decided to go with Family Investments. They are the UK’s largest provider of child trust funds and have been doing it the longest – both of which inspire confidence. They are also the provider used by the government to invest your money if you don’t choose your own fund, and they seem to be used by a number of banks as an investment partner – again, this all inspires confidence. Their website is very user friendly, and they are the only provider which allows you to view and manage your account online. I always feel that I look after my investments better if I can see what is happening, so this feature really appealed and I think it will also be a really nice way of teaching our daughter about the nest egg that is growing for her. Having chosen Family Investments, we looked at their different funds – they have a general fund, and an ethical fund. The ethical fund doesn’t invest in airy fairy hippy things (as I suspect my father assumed when I mentioned it to him!) the main difference seems to be that they do not invest in companies which are damaging to the environment or human rights. Having a little person to think of this seems more important than ever – and looking at the performance tables, the ethical fund has actually outperformed the other, so it made sense all round. We set up the account online and everything was sent out very quickly and efficiently.

I have just applied for this ethical child trust fund account and found that it could not be easier. A quick, simple online application and they send you the pack and envelope to send in the trust fund voucher. It has the best return on investment I have seen since the scheme started and I hope that continues in the current climate. They seem to avoid most of the markets which are strugling recently and provide free gifts in line with this. An option of gift vouchers for ethical clothing and skin care or a combination of vouchers and a british broad leaf tree to be planted in your name. Looks good so far, will wait and see how it goes from here.

really quick and easy to set up - can set up direct debits on line which helps if relatives want to add money to the account on a regular basis. it is too early to review the earnings but it is the fund that the government would pick if you do not use the voucher within a year of receiving it so i am hoping that it is one to trust! opening a stakeholder account will always carry a risk but from the child's 13th birthday the shares are moved to lower risk investments which should hopefully help to make it a good one when they're 18.

After much searching and looking at lots of handouts,I decided to open an Ethical Trust Fund with Family Investments. The website is very easy to get around and was very easy to apply for the account. They send you a self addressed envelope to post the £250 CTF voucher to them. They take a fee of 1.5% for running the account. The account can be viewed and managed online - and like lots of the accounts out there the investments are automatically moved to lower risks after the child turns 13.I set up a direct debit for of one hundred pounds a month, and extra payment slips were provided for other family members to set up direct debits, if they wanted to. I have an other ctf account for my other child and this new account is by far the simplest and fasted to set up. This account makes it easy to change your regular payments and depending on the sum of money that you set up the direct debit for, effects the free gift that you will receive. I am very pleased with their service and their trust fund.

When we received the voucher for our son we had a lot on (don’t well all!) and so it got put to one side. Finally I got round to sorting it out. I did quite a bit of investigating and found the MyEggNest.com site most useful. We choose the Family Investment Ethical Child Trust Fund because of its ethical base and the information available also showed the fund to be performing well. It was easy to open the account and we have online access. As an added bonus we received some vouchers for setting up a direct debit. I haven’t checked out its performance recently and so am not sure if the good performance is continuing. Would recommend this fund.

Our daughter was born in March this year and I’ve had her child trust fund voucher on the side for a while now collecting dust, so I thought I best put it to good use. I was originally going to use Nationwide as a CTF account but found the process with them to be long and over complicated and a lot more hassle. I used Google to search on the net and found the MyEggNest site which had a range of different CTF’s to choose from. We opted for the Ethical CTF from Family Investments and it couldn’t have been easier to setup. Within 10 minutes the account was setup and a few days later we received our welcome pack. We’ve now setup a direct debit and will continue to monitor the CTF performance over the coming years. Highly recommend them.

I wanted to make the correct choice in Child Trust Fund for my Son, after reading other reviews on the Stakeholder Trust Fund from Family Investments I was satisfied that this was currently one of the best on the market and has previously in the past offered a good return, I know this is no judge for future performance but believe this is a good sign. The applcation was fast and very straight forward and was all complete within days of first applying. Another good thing about Family Investments is that they have an online account so I can regulary check up on how my Son's account is performing.

My daughter was born in March and I've had her trust fund voucher sitting on my desk for a while. I had no idea what to do with it, so I googled child trust fund and found a link to myeggnest.com. After reading many of your reviews I felt completely at ease in investing my little ones money with family investments. The web site was so easy to use, I think I only took about 5 mins to set it up. which is good for me as I'm no pro on the pc. What I really liked about the fund was that it was an ethical one. As I've only just set it up, I have no bad comments to make on it.

After much research and deliberation, we decided to open an Ethical Trust Fund with Family Investments. The website is easy to navigate, and the account REALLY easy to set up - took all of three minutes. You do have to post the CTF voucher directly to them, but they provide the address to do it directly if it is about to run out to save time. The account provides lots of updates, and can be viewed online - the management fee for running the account is 1.5% and the investments are automatically moved to lower risks after the child turns 13. I found them very easy to work with. We set up a direct debit for ourselves, and slips were provided for other family members to set up direct debits for themselves if they wanted to (which saved lots of hassle for us!). All in all - I am very pleased with their service and their trust fund, and if we have any more kids - we'll be using them again. Someone above did mention that you should setup a top up for as much as you can - and I agree! This account makes it easy to change your regular payments, and you do get a free gift which goes up the more you save monthly.

after a great deal of searching through all the different information i could find to do with the child trust fund i finally settled on the ethical child trust. this seems like a good choice for my child because of the sensitivity towards the companies which the Ethical Child Trust fund choose to invest my son's money in. i set the account up on the internet and all i had to do from then was to post the cheque along. i was also able to set up a small direct debit into this account so that it would grow year on year, so hopefully one day he will have a few pounds to spend as he chooses. all in all i can't find any downsides to this account only good. lets see how it performs now and the review may well change!

Alternative to CTFs

Tax Exempt Saving Plans (TESPs)

One of the best ways to save for your children's future is the Tax-Exempt Savings Plans (TESPs) from friendly societies. TESPs offer parents a simple way to save up to £25 for each family member per month in addition to, or instead of, a CTF.

TESPs can help you build up a lump sum for any child through small regular payments. You choose when the money is available for them, but the policy must run until they’re at least 16 and run for a minimum of 10 years.

TESPs are available for every member of the household so a family of four could save up to £100 a month tax-free and, provided the TESPs have been set up in the parent's names, the money remains firmly under their control. In addition, the flexibility of TESPs mean that they can be set up to mature at different points in a child's life.

Children's Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs)

Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) allow people to save their money in a range of investments such as cash, stocks and shares. Unlike investing directly in these products, investing through an ISA provides certain benefits. An ISA is often referred to as a “tax wrapper” which goes around your savings, protecting them from paying certain taxes.

Many parents are using their own ISA allowance to invest for their children (as the age for investment is 18 yrs). Parent can put away upto £7,000 pa each.

You can save cash in an ISA and the interest will be tax-free and/ or you can invest in shares or funds in an ISA and any capital growth and dividend income will be tax-free.
