Good Points: Abbey send out statements that are easy to understand. You are kept upto date on all issues relating to your account.
Bad Points: Staff in the Bolton branch were very off handed and could'nt be bothered helping us in person, so got the forms sent out to us through the post. No personal touch....not people friendly.

Overall, apart from the initial hick-up with the staff at the barnch, I found Abbey to be fantastic and highly recommended.

Good Points: Easy to set up.
Bad Points: Can't do it in branch.
First reviewed 25 June, 2009 by Nina
This was easy to set up, and although it couldn't actually be dealt with 'in-branch' I was able to pick up the blank forms and return my completed form to a branch who then sent it on to the relevant department.
I can't comment on the staff service as once I had made my mind up who I was going to use for the CTF I just went ahead and got the forms.
I do like the fact that after 6 months I had an statement-like update on the fund (even though the balance has decreased - even beyond my additional contributions - most likely due to the current economic climate) it is nice to get the regular updates on the balance. with.

Good Points: Good points are the product is quick and easy! Not too much trouble to go through to find something cold are sefficient. Better than a bag of frozen peas.
Bad Points: Putting things in the freezer makes it so hard to find if you have a chest freezer which is deep but if not it can be put down on the side shelf of the freezer.

This product is excelent. I would of probably of come up with something similar but not as good! Great minds think alike ay. Its quick and easy and there is so fuss and panicing, its cold, resonable size and fun as there are cute characters that children are familiar with.

my sons child trust fund is with abbey, its non stakeholder, i get a statements every six months which i think is fab as most child trust funds you get one a year. never had any problems. they have a holding account so if you put more than 1500 a year it goes into a holding account and they swipe it into your childs trust fund the following year. i had a government funded voucher for my son and i just sent it off with details and recived confirmation of the account and account number you can put money into the account at anytime through standing order or over the counter at the bank or direct from another bank account over the phone. i am expecting another baby and will also use abbey for my next childs trust fund account.

Good Points: Opening this account was very easy to do. The main reasons I was attracted to this account was the fact that they are a well known stable organisation who are well known for being good to their customers + the fact that you need not apply in branch. I was sent out some simple forms and once i sent them back with the voucher - that was it!

It is also very easy to make monthly contributions by setting up and direct debit or standing order - you can also contribute any amount at any time over the phone.

Good Points: Easy to set up.
Bad Points: In 2 years we have only had 2 statements.
Asked to set up an annual direct debit to pay into it, and it never happened.
First reviewed 11 May, 2009 by Debbie
We chose this account as this is were we hold our main bank account. I'm sure there are probably better accounts, but for ease of joining and keeping up to date, it seemed the best one for us.
We did request that a direct debit be set up on an annual basis as we agreed to both pay £1 per week into the fund – didn’t want to put too much in as its not accessible for such a long time and we have another savings account set up for our son. We sent this request with the original form and it never got processed.

Good Points: None, after three attempts I gave up trying to open an account.
Bad Points: I visited two branches and was unable to open a simple account as no-one in the nranch was qualified. I found this irritating as it is clear that they just don't rate the business.

Good Points: Paying into the account has been a smooth process.
Bad Points: Apart from the annual statement there is no way to check the progress of the account.
Staff give the wrong information about the accounts they offer.
First reviewed 03 May, 2009 by Chelle
Most of the staff can not give you any information about the trust funds hey offer or give you the wrong information. We booked an appointment to get advice butwhen we arrived for it, the person was unavailable, no reason given. We were given an application form and basic information, as I had researched the different types of funds anyway we filled this in only to have it returned a week later with a letter informing us they no longer offer the account recommended to us.
Our other daughter has her child trust fund with them and apart from the annual statement there is no way to check the balance or indeed get any information about the progress of her account, which is frustrating.

Easy, online application and information as a download. The site offers different advice on the different types of CTF available and you easily print off the CTF application form and can apply then by post so it was ideal for me who doesn't have the time to go down into a branch. also i feel confident as its a well known company, leading high street building soicity.

Bad Points: none

I have been banking with Abbey myself for the last 15 years (formerly Abbey National)and have always been pleased with their level of service regarding any of my accounts. My whole family are very familiar with the effience of their customer service and the staff are always pleased to help, approachable and friendly and are trained well so can provide you with all the information you require about the Fund. The girl explained the whole ins and outs of the system, unlike another bank which my friend had used, she was just handed some leaflets to take hoome!! I would highly recommend the Abbey fund as i have everything about it easy to understand, easy to use, and once again the staff are superb

Having been with Abbey since 1990 I am happy to say they have always provided me with unbiased information and not pressured me inot taking their products.  So when it came time to decide where to open my daughter trust fund my first port of call was Abbey, they were very helpful and explained all of my options and said they were more than happy to help me if I had any furhter questions.  I was not asked to make any decisions there and then but to come back if I decided I wanted to go ahead.  When it came to opening the fund it was an easy and smooth process. I receive annual updates and can change the type of fund if I am unhappy with the returns.  I would recommend this fund as it was the most flexible the customer service has been excellent.

2 options i.e stakeholder (based on the stockmarket so more risk) and non-stakeholder(less risky). Bad Points: not very different to others in the market. Was easy to set up and paperwork was minimal. we chose the stakeholder option as we were hoping for the better returns.

Tax Exempt Saving Plans (TESPs)

One of the best ways to save for your children's future is the Tax-Exempt Savings Plans (TESPs) from friendly societies. TESPs offer parents a simple way to save up to £25 for each family member per month in addition to, or instead of, a CTF.

TESPs can help you build up a lump sum for any child through small regular payments. You choose when the money is available for them, but the policy must run until they’re at least 16 and run for a minimum of 10 years.

TESPs are available for every member of the household so a family of four could save up to £100 a month tax-free and, provided the TESPs have been set up in the parent's names, the money remains firmly under their control. In addition, the flexibility of TESPs mean that they can be set up to mature at different points in a child's life.
