It still amazes me the amount of generosity of some people. Rich benefactors are constantly bequeathing a substantial portion of their wealth to educational institutions. The reasons for this generosity are many. However, generally, there is only one purpose - to help disadvantage young people get a starting base in life. So if are experiencing financial hardship with educating your children, do not be embarrass and ask for assistance. One in three independent pupils receive some form of financial assistance. Would you pass on your wealth to an educational institution? Or does charity begin at home?

I'm not sure what the tax implications of making donations such as these are, however I would assume there are some breaks available.

You can find financial help with education not only via the school, college or university, but through some hugely obscure trusts ... some are so specific that they even specify stuff like "ex-shopkeeper who lived and worked for at least two years between the lamp-post at x street and the lamp-post at z street".
There are two ways to find them (at least in Scotland, I'm not sure about England) - at Register House, who ought/used to hold all the relevant files .. when I went it was pre-computer days and it was fascinating to see all these dusty wee drawers with postcard indexes of grants like the one above!) and via your library's reference shelf - ask for the books which list charities and grants.
It's absolutely amazing how many there are, and though they're usually for small amounts - hundreds not thousands - they're also not so well known so you have a good chance of being considered.

tax breaks are good on these type of schemes, and the potential marketing for a company is also good, PR is a cheap thing sometimes

i found specific grants for educational trips and outings through my local library - helps with the 'extras'
